In an era defined by rapid technological advancement and global innovation, science literacy has become more crucial than ever. Yet, Pakistan continues to face significant challenges in this vital area. According to the Global Innovation Index 2024, the country ranks 91st out of 133 economies—an outcome largely attributed to two key factors:
The effects of global progress are being increasingly felt in Pakistan, underscoring the urgent need for greater investment in innovation, technology, and quality education. As the nation's economic and industrial heart, Karachi is particularly in need of initiatives that inspire its youth to pursue higher education—especially in the STEM disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These fields are not only essential for economic development but also play a pivotal role in addressing complex national challenges and driving societal advancement.
Recognising this need, The Dawood Foundation (TDF) has established itself as a leading advocate for science literacy in Pakistan. Since 2016, the Foundation has organised some of the country’s largest science exhibitions, successfully sparking curiosity and enthusiasm among young learners. Understanding the importance of engaging children with science from an early age, TDF launched the MagnifiScience Children’s Studio in 2018. This initiative provided interactive, hands-on learning opportunities, making science both accessible and enjoyable for children.
Building on these foundations, TDF marked a significant milestone in 2021 with the inauguration of Pakistan’s first contemporary and interactive science centre—TDF’s MagnifiScience Centre (MSC). Designed to promote scientific literacy through informal and experiential learning, MSC offers a dynamic environment where curiosity leads to critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving. To date, it remains a unique institution in the country, welcoming individuals of all ages and backgrounds to explore scientific ideas through engaging exhibits and practical demonstrations.
Located in Karachi, this state-of-the-art facility features over 400 interactive exhibits across a multi-level building, complete with a science garden, auditorium, and STEM laboratory. MSC serves as an inclusive hub for science education—one that not only ignites an interest in scientific discovery but also cultivates essential skills such as analytical thinking and innovation.
Many of the themes explored within MSC are thoughtfully aligned with the national school curriculum, helping to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application. Furthermore, the centre promotes indigenous science and technology by showcasing locally inspired exhibits that highlight the ingenuity of Pakistan’s communities and traditional knowledge systems.
Through its sustained commitment to science education, TDF is nurturing a generation empowered with the skills and mindset necessary to thrive in a knowledge-driven economy. By championing science literacy, TDF envisions a more innovative, inclusive, and forward-looking Pakistan.
